Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering Department is one of the oldest and broadest traditional engineering disciplines that applies the principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. Mechanical engineering emerged as a field during the industrial revolution in Europe in the 18th century; however, its development can be traced back several thousand years around the world. The field has continually evolved to incorporate advancements in technology, and mechanical engineers today are pursuing developments in such fields as composites, mechatronics, and nanotechnology. Mechanical engineering overlaps with aerospace engineering, railway engineering, building services engineering, metallurgical engineering, marine engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering,petroleum engineering, manufacturing engineering, and chemical engineering in varying degrees.

The economic prosperity and growth of GDP of a developing nation like us, depends largely on the expansion of industry and manufacturing activities. This leads to a requirement of huge number of intelligent and competent Mechanical engineers in our country in coming years.

In this perspective, Hooghly Engineering & Technology College has started the Mechanical Engineering Department in the year of 2010. But within a very short span of three years the department has been setting up gradually very high standards in terms of infrastructure as well as quality education as per need of the ‘present day’ with the help of a group of extremely dedicated and knowledgeable faculty and technical staff members with the active supports from members of all other departments as well as administration. The Department provides ample laboratory facilities and hands-on training to the students.

The Department has already developed different laboratories like Manufacturing Technology Lab, Machining & Machine Tools Lab, Material Testing Lab, Applied Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer Lab, Thermal power Engineering Lab, I. C. Engine Lab, Air-conditioning & Refrigeration Lab, Metrology & Measurement Lab, Machine Drawing Lab, Computer-aided Design Lab, Applied Mechanics Lab, Fluid Mechanics &Hydraulic Machines Lab, Dynamics of Machines Lab etc. as per WBUT syllabus.

The department also extend support to the first year students of all branches in their theoretical subjects like Engineering Mechanics and Engineering Thermodynamics & Fluid Mechanics as well as practical subjects like Basic Engineering Drawing & Computer Graphics which includes training on Auto CAD software and Workshop Practice and hands-on training in the conventional machining and other traditional trades like Smithy, Forging, Welding, Foundry and Pattern Making.

The department have started organizing student certification training programme in collaboration with Trident Techlabs on CAD/CAM/CAE using CREO PARAMETRIC software during semester recesses.
